إذا فكرت في صورة شخص على دراجة.. ما الصورة الأولى التي تطرأ على ذهنك؟
هل هو درّاج محترف بخوذة وملابس رياضية ضيقة على دراجة بإطار رفيع وناقل للسرعات؟ هل هو رجل خمسيني في طريقه لمصلحة حكومية حيث يعمل أو ينهي معاملة؟ هل هو شاب يحمل فوق رأسه خبزاً؟ هل هي إمرأة؟ هل هي في طريقها للعمل أم تتنزه بدراجة مؤجرة على كورنيش المعمورة؟ هل يوجد إضافات على الدراجة؟ كرسي لطفل؟ سلة؟ زينة ملونة على الإطار؟.. هل يتحرك كل هؤلاء بنفس السرعة والمهارة؟ هل تختلف دراجاتهم ووظائفها ودورها في حياتهم اليومية؟ هل يوجد ثقافة دراجات في مصر أم عدة مجموعات صغيرة بعضها ينمو وبعضها ينكمش؟ وما محل هذه الثقافة جغرافياً وتاريخياً في الإسكندرية؟
تتعامل الورشة مع عدة أوجه من الأبعاد الاجتماعية لاستخدام الدراجات في مدينة الإسكندرية وتسعى للإجابة على الأسئلة المتعلقة بالثقافة المحلية للدراجات ولماذا نحتاج هذه الثقافة على أي حال. ركزت الورشة على تاريخ الاسكندرية وتطوره بالعلاقة مع وسائل التنقل. وتضمنت مناقشة تأثير وسائل التنقل على شكل والحياة المجتمعية في المدينة وتناول قيادة الدراجة كممارسة اجتماعية وارتباطها بالهويات والمكانات والوصوم المجتمعية.ز
قام المشاركون خلال أيام الورشة بتطوير المفاهيم المطروحة من خلال مناقشات تفاعلية ودراسة حالة الإسكندرية، والخروج في جولة في شوارع المدينة. وإختتمت بمناقشة الطرق الحالية للمناصرة وتغيير الممارسات المجتمعية ومدى ابتكارها وخطورة إقصائيتها في التغيير.ز

When you think of a bicycle user, what is the first image that comes to your mind?
Is it an image of a professional cyclist with a helmet and a spandex outfit on a road bike? or a man in his fifties riding his way to his work in a governmental institution? is it one of Cairo’s bread cyclists? Is it an image of a man or a woman on a bike? is she riding on a commute to her workplace or is she having a small ride for fun on the waterfront Corniche? How does the bicycle look like? Is it a cargo bike or a city bike? does it have a child seat? does it have ornamental colors on the tires?
By asking these questions, we want to challenge the stereotypes about the bicycle users, and provoke further questions that might help in planning for cycling. What is the speed of a cyclist Vs. a commuter on a bike? How important is the bike as an everyday tool for different types of users? and is there a cycling culture in Egypt? how does it look like and where is it located?
The cycling culture workshop tackles the different social aspects of bicycle use in Alexandria, and provokes questions on the evolution of the local cycling (sub)culture in Alexandria through the years. Through various interactive activities, the participants developed an understanding of the influences of the social norms and the urban planning paradigms on the cycling culture and vice versa, and how the practice of everyday cycling is linked to some identities and sometimes taboos.
The workshop ended with a discussion on cycling advocacy and the work needed to integrate the bicycle in our streets and the bicycle users in our society.
This workshop was organized in cooperation with Cairo Institute for Liberal Arts and Sciences (CILAS) and School of Humanities and Social Sciences at the American University in Cairo (HUSS LAB, AUC)
